for the April Apollos Notes.
The Apollos are the longest established “club within the Club” at the MAC, founded in 1943. The Harvard Dictionary of Music credits the MAC Apollos as the “oldest continuing mens' singing group in the general community.” They perform two dinner shows annually, in April and November. In December, the chorus entertains with Christmas music at area nursing homes, plus the two “Breakfast with Santa” events at the Club. The Apollos sponsor some special events too - an Oyster Party each March and a picnic in June.
The director is Greg Schweizer, a professional musician and music
arranger. Rehearsals are on Mondays at 7 p.m. on the 10th floor
of the downtown clubhouse (except June-July). All are welcome to
join the Apollos for singing and the camaraderie that follows in
the Jack Buck Grille.
Currently, there are about 90 members, 40 as active singers and the rest as social members. Music, good fellowship and community service are some of the rewards of being an Apollo, a group wherein friendships flourish.
